The formula and what 200,000 means

TRIR = (recordables × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked

The constant 200,000 represents 100 full-time employees each working 40 hours per week for 50 weeks: 100 × 40 × 50 = 200,000. It normalizes your incident count to a common denominator so companies of different sizes can be compared. The result is expressed per 100 full-time equivalents (FTEs).

DART uses the same base: (DART cases × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked. The only difference is what you count in the numerator.

Hours worked = actual hours worked by all employees — from payroll or timesheets. This excludes vacation, sick leave, and holidays, even if paid. Estimation is allowed if actuals are unavailable (scheduled hours or 8 hrs/workday). Include part-time, temporary, and seasonal workers; do not include independent contractors you do not supervise.

Display to one decimal place — this is the BLS convention used in its own published worked examples and benchmarks.

What counts as a recordable case?

Under 29 CFR 1904.7(b)(1)(i)–(vi), a work-related injury or illness is recordable if it results in any of the following:

  1. (i) Death
  2. (ii) Days away from work
  3. (iii) Restricted work or transfer to another job
  4. (iv) Medical treatment beyond first aid
  5. (v) Loss of consciousness
  6. (vi) Diagnosis of a significant injury or illness by a physician or other licensed health care professional

First aid only — including over-the-counter medication at nonprescription strength, simple bandaging, or a single follow-up visit for observation — is not recordable.

Note: fatalities are also reportable to OSHA within 8 hours of learning of the death under 29 CFR 1904.39. This is separate from OSHA 300 recordkeeping — the 8-hour reporting requirement exists regardless of whether your company is otherwise exempt from recordkeeping.

TRIR vs. DART — Form 300 column mapping

The most common confusion in TRIR and DART calculation is which Form 300 columns feed each rate. Use this mapping:

DART ≤ TRIR by definition — DART cases are a subset of recordable cases. If your DART exceeds your TRIR, you have a data-entry error on Form 300.

How prequalification platforms use your TRIR

When you fill out an ISNetworld, Avetta, or Veriforce questionnaire, your TRIR is one of the first numbers requested. Hiring clients set their own thresholds — a GC in heavy construction may accept a higher rate than one doing government work or working for a utility with a strict contractor safety program.

Most platforms request a 3-year TRIR in addition to the current-year figure. A single-year rate can swing significantly for small crews; the 3-year average smooths that volatility and gives reviewers a clearer picture of your safety trend.

TRIR appears alongside EMR and your written safety programs as the three primary safety metrics reviewers evaluate. A strong TRIR with incomplete programs can still trigger a review request — the programs are what document how you achieved the number.

2024 BLS industry benchmarks

The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) annually. The 2024 data, released in January 2026, shows the following sector-level TRIR benchmarks. The release was delayed approximately two months due to the October 1 – November 12, 2025 federal shutdown.

There is no universal "good TRIR." Each hiring client sets its own threshold. These sector averages are a reference point — a rate below your sector average is competitive; a rate significantly above it will draw scrutiny from most platforms. Ask your GC or platform contact for their specific cutoff.

What about EMR?

The Experience Modification Rate (EMR, or "mod") is a workers compensation premium multiplier calculated by your state's rating bureau or the NCCI using three years of your claims history. Unlike TRIR — which you compute from your own Form 300 data — EMR is computed by your insurer or rating bureau, and no public formula gives you your exact number in advance. A good EMR to understand or improve is best discussed with your workers comp carrier.

TRIR Calculator FAQs

TRIR = (number of OSHA-recordable injuries and illnesses × 200,000) ÷ total employee hours worked. The constant 200,000 represents 100 full-time employees working 40 hours per week for 50 weeks (100 × 40 × 50 = 200,000), so the result is expressed per 100 full-time equivalents. For example: 11 recordable cases and 130,000 total hours → (11 × 200,000) ÷ 130,000 = 16.9. TRIR draws from OSHA Form 300 columns G+H+I+J.
There is no universal "good TRIR." Each hiring client — general contractor, insurance underwriter, or prequalification platform — sets its own threshold. What matters is how your rate compares to the BLS industry average for your sector. The 2024 BLS average for private industry overall is 2.3 per 100 full-time employees; construction averages 2.2. A rate significantly above your sector average will draw scrutiny on ISNetworld, Avetta, and Veriforce. Different hiring clients within those platforms can set different cutoffs — there is no single number that guarantees approval. Compare your rate against the sector benchmark in the calculator above and ask your GC or platform contact about their specific threshold.
Both use the same 200,000-hour base, but they count different incidents. TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate) counts all recordable cases — OSHA Form 300 columns G+H+I+J. DART counts only the more serious subset: cases involving days away from work (column H) or job transfer and restriction (column I). A case requiring medical treatment beyond first aid but no days away would appear in TRIR but not DART. DART is always less than or equal to TRIR by definition — if DART exceeds TRIR, that is a data-entry error on Form 300.
Total hours worked means hours actually worked by all employees — taken from payroll records or timesheets. It excludes paid time not worked: vacation, sick leave, holidays, and any other paid leave. If exact records are unavailable, OSHA allows estimation using scheduled hours or 8 hours per workday. Include all workers: full-time, part-time, temporary, and seasonal. Do not include hours from independent contractors you do not supervise.
Yes — a TRIR of 0.0 is a valid and often competitive result, and prequalification platforms request it regardless of your incident count. A zero rate is a strong number, but reviewers also examine your EMR, written safety programs, and multi-year trend before making a final prequalification determination. A small workforce can achieve a 0.0 TRIR in a single good year; many platforms therefore ask for a 3-year average. Submit your records accurately and support the number with documented programs.
